Freedom Dogs
Being an active member in the Freedom Dogs group, I have witnessed this becoming a positive growing experience for all the participants. The group meets once a week with some meetings running longer than others. During this time, I have noticed that the dogs’ feelings relate a lot to humans’. Whatever your mood is, the dogs respond in accordance with them…it all depends on the patience of the person and observation.

Jane, the group facilitator, teaches a great deal about patience through her style and attitude with the group. Jane is very interested in our opinions and is eager to hear what we have to say. I’ve never once been cut off by her. This is important because it helps all of the young ladies become more open with her.  The dogs respond to her well, and she continues to teach them. Jane is accepting and she always does the right thing. Jane is an inspiration to all of the people with whom she works. Because of her, I have re-established my belief that there are good people in the world who actually would like to make a difference.

Being given the time to experiment, learn and grow is much needed for the self-esteem issues that are present in the population here. As for the dogs, they are sweet and innocent. It amazes me how far affection will go. The dogs respond well to it.  They have assisted the young ladies here in gaining back the trust that they lost in their past in relationships with dogs as well as humans. The group has tremendously helped them to make progress in their treatment. The atmosphere of the group makes us all feel at ease and could make anyone feel free to express themselves. Sometimes, even if only for just an hour, this group is all that I need. To simply relax is such a joy. There is no greater feeling than acceptance, and we all accept each other openly. The dogs read our feelings well and provide us with comfort. For some girls, the dogs provide a sense of self that nothing else can. I would most definitely recommend this group to people in all walks of life. Participating in this group has proved to be a very worthwhile experience.
